Dots and boxes is the quiet member of the paper-game family: no letters, no symbols, just a field of dots slowly turning into territory. It's also the only playground classic that was invented by a professional mathematician — and it shows, in the best way. Here's how to play, and where it came from.
The setup
Draw a grid of dots — for example 5×5 dots, which makes a 4×4 field of potential boxes. Two players take turns; each turn consists of drawing one short line connecting two horizontally or vertically adjacent dots. (No diagonals, ever.)
The rules
- One line per turn. Any unclaimed edge between two adjacent dots is legal.
- Complete a box, claim a box. If your line is the fourth side of a 1×1 box, that box is yours — write your initial inside (RivalPit colours it for you).
- Completing a box grants an extra turn. You must move again immediately. If that line completes another box, you keep going — long runs of boxes falling in one visit are the heart of the game.
- One line can complete two boxes at once (the line between two three-sided boxes). You claim both — and still take your extra move.
- No passing. Even when every remaining line gives something away, you must draw one.
- Game over, count up. When every possible line is drawn, all boxes are claimed. Most boxes wins; on an even total, a draw is possible.
The one rule everyone forgets
The extra-turn rule is the entire personality of dots and boxes. New players treat it as a bonus; experienced players know it's a obligation — after taking a box you must draw another line somewhere, and late in the game every remaining line opens a new region for your opponent. This is why the strongest move is sometimes to decline the last boxes of a chain — an idea deep enough that we gave it its own article (see the double-cross).
Where the game comes from
Dots and boxes was published in 1889 by the French mathematician Édouard Lucas — the same Lucas famous for the Tower of Hanoi puzzle and the Lucas number sequence — under the name la pipopipette. Lucas presented it as a game of "strategy and combinations" for students, and it spread through French schools before crossing borders and languages. English speakers have called it dots and boxes, boxes, squares, paddocks, and dot-to-dot; whatever the name, the rules stayed remarkably stable for 130+ years.
Mathematicians never quite let go of it either. The game appears in serious combinatorial game theory — most famously in Elwyn Berlekamp's book The Dots and Boxes Game: Sophisticated Child's Play — because beneath the crayon-and-paper surface it hides genuine mathematical structure (chain parity, nimber theory) that wasn't fully mapped until the 20th century. A 5×5-box game between experts is deeper than most people would believe.
Playing well, briefly
- Early: draw lines that don't give any box its third side.
- Middle: notice the chains forming — connected strings of boxes that will fall together.
- Late: when forced to give something up, give up the smallest region on the board.
- Endgame: learn the two-box sacrifice. It converts losing positions into wins.
