The original Bounce launched in 2001 as one of the built-in games on the Nokia 9210 Communicator, Nokia's early smartphone-style handset. It cast players as a small red rubber ball navigating side-scrolling levels by jumping through hoops, dodging spikes and moving hazards, and using pickups like speed boosts and anti-gravity effects to get through increasingly tricky platforming sections — all rendered on a screen a fraction the size of a modern smartphone's. Nokia liked it enough to keep shipping it: Bounce and its sequels were pre-installed or made available for download on a run of Series 40 phones through the mid-2000s, including the Nokia 6610 and Nokia 3220. Finnish studio Rovio — yes, the future creators of Angry Birds — developed several of the later entries in the series, including Bounce Tales and Bounce Boing Voyage on the N-Gage, showing just how much of a foundation this small ball-physics platformer laid for mobile gaming's next big hit.
