Dig one tile the wrong way and a boulder that was sitting patiently above you suddenly isn't — Boulder Dash turned simple physics into one of the tensest puzzle formats ever made.
How to Play Gem Digger on RivalPit
RivalPit's Gem Digger rebuilds that same cave-digging tension. Use ← ↑ → ↓ or W/A/S/D on desktop (tap the arrows, or swipe, on mobile) to dig through dirt one tile at a time, collecting gems as you go. The catch: boulders sitting on top of dirt stay put only as long as that dirt is underneath them. Dig out the tile below a boulder and it falls — instantly, straight down — which is either your ticket to crushing an obstacle in your path, or the thing that ends your run if you're standing underneath it when it drops. Every move has to account for what's above you, not just what's in front of you.
The Real History of Boulder Dash
Boulder Dash is one of the true landmarks of video game history: it launched in March 1984 on Atari 8-bit computers, created by two Canadian developers, Peter Liepa and Chris Gray, and published by First Star Software. Players controlled a character named Rockford, digging through cave dirt to collect diamonds while boulders and rocks obeyed a simple falling rule — stay put until the dirt beneath is cleared, then drop and become a genuine hazard — creating puzzles built entirely out of the interaction between digging and physics, including tricks like dropping a boulder onto a butterfly to turn it into diamonds. The game was a massive hit and was ported to nearly every home computer and console of the era. Decades later, as Java-capable Nokia phones needed content, official Boulder Dash ports — including "Boulder Dash: ROCKS! 25th Anniversary Edition" — were released specifically as downloadable Nokia Java games, bringing Rockford's cave-digging physics puzzle to a phone screen more than 25 years after it first appeared on a home computer.
