The History of Archery
Archery is one of the oldest skills in human history. Evidence of bow-and-arrow use stretches back tens of thousands of years across multiple continents, with arrowhead technology appearing independently in Africa, Europe, and Asia long before recorded history. For most of that time, the bow was primarily a tool of survival and warfare — used for hunting game and, later, as a devastating weapon on ancient and medieval battlefields, from the composite bows of Central Asian horse archers to the longbows of medieval England and Wales.
Archery's shift from practical weapon to formal target sport took shape mainly in England, where archery clubs and organized shooting competitions grew in popularity among the gentry from the 18th century onward, even as the bow's military relevance faded with the rise of firearms. That competitive tradition was formalized with the founding of the Grand National Archery Society in 1861, which became the sport's governing body in Britain and helped establish standardized rules, distances, and equipment for target shooting. Archery made its Olympic debut in 1900, but inconsistent international rules led to it being dropped from the Games in the 1920s. It wasn't until the International archery federation established unified world rules that the sport returned permanently to the Olympic program in 1972, where it remains a fixture today, blending an ancient skill with precise modern competition.
